Emily Artesani '06 Named LEC Track Athlete of the Year

June 4, 2009

The University of Southern Maine women’s indoor track and field team collected a pair of awards Wednesday when the Little East Conference released its annual end-of-the-season awards. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced that USM junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine [OHS Class of '06]) had been selected the Track Athlete of the Year, and freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine/Cony) was a co-recipient of the Rookie Field Athlete of the Year Award. All the awards were chosen by a vote of the conference’s head coaches. Artesani and Dumas were mainstays of this winter’s USM team that won its ninth consecutive Little East Conference and New England Alliance championships. Artesani was cited four straight weeks as the LEC Track Athlete of the Week while Dumas collected an LEC weekly honor nine times during the indoor season. Artesani won an unprecedented three titles at the Little East Conference Championships, taking the 55-meter dash in a time of 7.69 seconds, the 200 meters in 27.09 and the 400 meters, for the third straight year, with her time of 1:00.98. No one previously had swept the three sprint titles at the LEC meet. In the New England Alliance scoring, Artesani was first in the 400, second in the 200 and fourth in the 55-meter dash.

Congratulations to Emily on being recognized for her outstanding achievement!
