OHS Speech and Debate Team Continues Tradition of Excellence

April 13, 2011

The OHS Speech and Debate Team's 24-Hour Read-In ended at 6:00 p.m. Saturday, April 9, after a marathon session of poetry, fiction, drama, children's literature and more.  In addition to raising a significant portion of the funds needed to support national tournament travel, the team made news!  Channel 5's film crew (including OHS alum Tom Round) spent more than an hour at the event, taping team performance of competition pieces and readings, and interviewing the students and their coach. If possible, the segment will be posted on You-Tube with a link from the OHS website and

The team is still working to meet its fundraising goal for travel to national competition, where OHS will represent Maine.  If you were unable to attend the 24-Hour Read-In and make your donation in person, you may still contribute to the team.
Checks should be made payable to Orono High School with "SPEECH AND DEBATE TEAM" on the memo line, and mailed to Orono High School, 14 Goodridge Dr., Orono ME 04473.

Team members are grateful to teachers Mr. Kirkpatrick, Ms. Moriarty, and Mr. Luthin, all of whom turned out to support the effort, as well as to Mark Bilyk, Louise Joliffe, Sam Chase, Siobhan Harrity, Will St. Peter, and other community volunteers
who helped with readings.

Through their roles in the 24-Hour Read-In, team members Norah Bird, Carson Foley, May Callahan, Jaiwei Zou, Paul Robinson, and Joe Paul earned additional performance points for OHS, helping not only to maintain our school's status among top scoring teams in the state, but also helping to boost Maine's ranking among other states in the nation.  Unlike athletics, drama, and other co-curricular activities in which competition classes are determined by school size, tiny Speech and Debate teams like OHS are up against teams of 30-50 members from huge schools in such cities as Lewiston and Portland.  Yet  the OHS team has consistently kept both Orono and Maine on the map, thanks to hard work, talent, and great coaching.  They have done so with grace: last year they were voted winners of Maine Forensic Association's "Sportsmanship Award" by their fellow competitors from across the state.  Aluma Greta Landis was one of Maine's top-scoring individual competitors when she graduated in 2009.  Senior Norah Bird is currently the second-highest ranked individual in the state and will graduate with more points than anyone in OHS history.  Teammate junior Carson Foley is close behind, and others on the team are on track to maintain the school's tradition of excellence.
